It rolled up Chicago Avenue, passing new platforms every half-mile or so, idling briefly at red lights and picking up stray riders. on the first Saturday in December, with temperatures in the single digits, a stretch bus pulled out of the transit station at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., with one passenger, and headed north through Richfield into South Minneapolis. After the driver located the items, the dispatcher instructed the driver to take the items to the satellite depot at the far end of the run and check them into lost property there. The unruly dude heard the announcement and legged it.Ī few minutes later the dispatcher radioed the driver to notify him that the unruly passenger had informed police that he had left his wallet, transit card, phone and other personal effects on the bus when he took off. The dispatcher then made an announcement over the station PA advising everyone on the crowded platforms that no buses would be stopping at the station until further notice, and if anyone had questions, they should take it up with the unruly passenger in the 222 bus. This meant that all buses began passing through the station without stopping. The driver called it in to the dispatcher who put the station on bypass to allow police access. It was right in the middle of peak at one of the busiest stations on the network. Not answering your question, but I witnessed a passenger absolutely lose his s*** at a driver a little while back. I'm not very jaded so I try to give people a chance where a lot of my coworkers will bite people's heads off. ![]() You can use this for all sorts of bad behaviour, like pointing out fare evaders, people holding the door open, rule breakers, etc. This normally causes them to start jeering at the person to get off the bus because the rest of the passengers don't want to be late to wherever they're going. When the rest of the passengers hear that parking brake go off and I say something along the lines of "We're not moving until this person gets off", they know we're not moving until the troublemaker exits the bus. I don't call the dispatcher because the normally won't back us up over these smaller things. ![]() If I see them do it again, I do the normal pull over at the next stop, set the parking brake, open all the doors and tell them their ride is over. If they don't get off in 10 seconds, I call the dispatcher and make a PA announcement saying they are sending police / security and the people will be arrested if they don't immediately get off the bus.įor eating / drinking alcohol / smoking / listening to music on speakerphone, I give them one warning. If it's a physical altercation, I immediately pull over the bus, set the parking brake, open all the doors, and tell them to get off. I only call the dispatcher if I think the passenger will be defiant and not listen, because often times the dispatchers are too lenient and don't back the drivers up when we try enforcing the rules. If they don't stop by the time I get to the next stop, I pull the bus over, set the parking brake, open all the doors, and tell them their trip is over and they have to exit the bus. Things I intervene in: drugged / coked up people causing major disturbances, actions that look like they will escalate into physical altercations, actual physical altercations, people eating (pet peeve and against the rules) / drinking alcohol (illegal) / smoking (illegal) / loud music on speakerphone for an extended period (annoying).įor the first two, I make an announcement over the PA telling the passenger to stop the bad behaviour immediately. If it's a larger disturbance, skip asking the passenger to stop and immediately call the dispatcher. My agency (bus only fleet) has in place that for small disturbances, we are suppose to ask them to stop once and then call the dispatcher if the behaviour continues.
